BILL SOFIELD

Apr 08,2024 | SEEYE

The designer we're going to introduce to you today

Considered one of the most thought-provoking geniuses of his generation.

He's been inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame.

And won the prestigious Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award.

And he's the interior designer for GUCCI and other major brands.

Interior Design Magazine described him as "a choreographer of space".

As a true realist.

"design must be what it appears to be.

"design must be as good as it looks."

That's Bill Sofield.

Билл Софилд (Bill Sofield): «Я всегда следую совету Коко Шанель...»

Born in 1961 in New Jersey, Bill Sofield graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning and entered the design industry, working in a variety of fields from architecture, engineering and industrial design to interior, graphic and landscape design, building creative relationships with clients and collaborating with craftsmen and artists.

As Gucci's Royal Designer, Bill Sofield has designed more than 400 Gucci boutiques around the world, and his work for high end brands such as Bottega, Winston, Boucheron, and many others is a further testament to his passion and talent.

He has also been responsible for the design of numerous prestigious hotels, including the Grand Soho Hotel in New York and the Steinhart Hotel in San Francisco, and has designed residences for celebrities such as Joel Silver and Rachel Kohler.

Bill Sofield is an exemplary practitioner of modernist style, who believes that "design is not just about looking good, it has to be alive".

Bill Sofield says, "As designers, we are activists. Before we start designing, we must try to understand how people live and play."

Bill Sofield observes life with care, constantly balancing function and aesthetics, rationality and sensibility, and outlining spiritual spaces with simple lines. He understands the importance of a designer's need to communicate frequently with clients and to meet and fulfil their requirements.

Bill also often uses mix-and-match techniques in his colour schemes to bring balance to interior spaces.

Drawing inspiration from multiple cultures, he places importance on listening to each client's needs, balancing function and aesthetics. It is Bill's efforts that allow his designs to maintain a consistent sense of elegance and balance, and to combine the modernity of design with superb classical detailing to form the perfect proportions of his work, creating elegant, comfortable environments that help people realise contemporary spaces that are rich in substance.
